READING FOUNDATIONS CAMP
children entering kindergarten or 1st grade Reading Foundations focuses on helping parents and caregivers understand the important phonemic skills that help support beginning readers and writers. Phonemic skills are based on hearing and manipulating sounds in words. When these skills are explicitly taught, learners are better prepared for practicing beginning reading and writing. Phonemic or phonological skills include: rhyming, segmenting and blending individual sounds, hearing syllables in words and substituting sounds in words. We will give an explanation of the importance of each skill for parents and provide online resources to help introduce or reinforce the skill to learners. Ideas for practice activities at home will also be provided. There are a lot of easy ways parents can reinforce these skills with a few minutes of practice at a time, that will make a lifetime of difference for your learner!
